OLYMPIC hero Michael Phelps has issued a grovelling apology over his arrest for alleged drunk driving and speeding.
The champion swimmer sent a tweet yesterday evening which he said he was “deeply sorry” after being charged with driving under the influence.
Phelps, 29, was pulled over by police in Baltimore City after he was spotted driving at 84 miles per hour in a 45 zone, according to the Maryland Transportation Authorities.
The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday. The MdTA statement read: “He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests”, but he was “co-operative throughout”.
Ginger Clam don’t know whether the backstroke, front crawl and butterfly were part of the sobriety tests, but what we have found are a number of tweets from the man himself, regarding the episode.
He says: “(1/3) Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with a DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines.
“(2/3) I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility.
“(3/3) I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down”.
It is, however, not the first time Phelps has allegedly been naughty behind the wheel. As a 19 year old, he was busted and charged with DUI, DWI, violation of license restrictions and failure to obey a stop sign. That time he was sentenced to 18 months probation.
As a serial offender he should probably expect more than a slap on the wrists this time around, who knows, he might have to swap his car for his old swimming trunks in order to get from A to B.
